Hardscaping Irving, TX — Paver Patios, Concrete, and Retaining Walls Built for Expansive Soil

Hardscaping in Irving, TX operates in one of the most demanding outdoor surface environments in the country. The DFW Metroplex's expansive clay soils absorb moisture and swell during wet periods, then contract as they dry — and that seasonal movement cycle is the primary reason concrete driveways crack in patterns no one planned for, paver patios develop high spots and dips within a few years, and retaining walls that were plumb and solid in spring lean forward by fall. Hardscaping installed without accounting for these specific soil dynamics will require repair or replacement on a timeline that no homeowner planned for when they made the investment.
Build Strong Construction and Remodeling installs paver patios, stamped concrete surfaces, retaining walls, and drainage systems in Irving engineered from the base material up for DFW's specific combination of clay soil behavior, thermal expansion range, and storm drainage intensity. We excavate to the correct depth, install the correct base material in the correct compacted lifts, specify surface materials for the conditions they'll actually face in North Texas, and design drainage into every project so water has a clear, correct path away from the home's foundation. The result is hardscaping that holds its shape, drains correctly, and looks right in year five the same way it did on installation day.

Base Depth Specified for DFW Clay, Not Standard Charts

Irving's expansive clay requires a deeper base than most hardscaping guides assume. We specify the correct excavation depth and base depth for the soil conditions at each specific site.

Drainage Designed Before Any Surface Is Installed

We assess grade and water flow across your Irving property before specifying any drainage solution so the correction addresses the actual source rather than just its most visible symptom.

Retaining Wall Drainage Behind Every Course

Every retaining wall we build includes gravel backfill and a perforated drain pipe so hydrostatic pressure doesn't build up behind the wall during heavy rain.

We manage every phase of your Irving hardscaping project from the initial grade assessment through excavation, base preparation, surface installation, and final drainage confirmation. One team handles the full scope so the base, the surface, and the drainage system work together as a unified solution rather than as three separate scopes that happened to be installed in the same backyard by different contractors who didn’t share a plan.

Every hardscaping project we complete in Irving starts with a grade assessment that identifies where water currently flows across the property and where it needs to flow once the hardscaping is in place. Water management in North Texas is not an optional design consideration. DFW storm events can deposit several inches of rain in under an hour, and a patio, driveway, or retaining wall that wasn’t designed with drainage in mind will be fighting that water after every heavy rain event for as long as the structure stands.

I cannot say enough good things about my experience working with David Rubin and his team on my backyard project. From the very beginning to the completion of my back porch and beautiful gazebo area, David was there every step of the way. I had several contractors come out and give me estimates, but David immediately stood out. He was personable, honest, trustworthy, reliable, and genuinely interested in understanding exactly what I wanted. As a single woman who had never taken on a project like this before, I honestly had no idea where to start. David made the entire process comfortable and stress-free. I never felt pressured or taken advantage of. David worked with me on financing to make the project affordable while still giving me what I wanted. He went above and beyond what I expected. He even provided a shower door at no additional cost and moved and stained my fence without charging me extra. While I was at work, David and his crew handled everything—from picking up supplies to coordinating the work and making sure everything was taken care of. Whenever I had a concern, an idea, or something I felt needed to be corrected, David listened and took care of it right away. He would call and check in regularly to make sure I was happy and that everything was progressing the way it should. What impressed me most was that David treated my project as if it were his own. He didn’t just want to finish the job—he wanted me to be happy with the result. And the best part is that even after the project was completed, David has continued to be helpful. He has offered to connect me with people who can help with other things around my home, such as putting furniture together, installing ceiling fans, and other handyman projects. I truly feel like I gained a friend, not just a contractor. My backyard turned out beautiful, and I am extremely happy with the quality of the work and, most importantly, with how I was treated throughout the entire process. If you are looking for someone who is honest, dependable, caring, and truly stands behind his work, I highly recommend David Rubin and his team. You will not regret choosing them! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

The Build Strong team actually completed two projects - one to repair water damage to my retaining wall and a second to refurbish a very old pool deck that wasn't really safe to walk on. The retaining wall repair included a new French drain to relieve water pressure after rainfall and the work was completed quickly. A more challenging project followed that involved removing all of the sandstone slabs around our pool and resetting them so that they were graded correctly for runoff and to improve the overall look and safety of the entire pool. A new French drain was also installed. The work was well done and has turned an unsafe eyesore back into a nice looking finish. The first image is the upgraded pool prior to power washing and the second is the original look. We were very satisfied with both projects.

Core Features

Scopes We Install Across Irving Properties

Each hardscaping surface type has different base requirements, different drainage implications, and different permit pathways. Here's how we approach each one.

Paver Patio and Walkway Design and Installation

Custom paver patio and walkway installation with excavation depth, base material, and edge restraint specified for Irving's clay soil movement. We offer concrete, brick, and natural stone pavers in a variety of patterns, with permeable paver options available for properties where surface drainage management is a priority.

Stamped and Structural Concrete for Patios and Driveways

Concrete surfaces are poured with the correct mix design, rebar reinforcement, and control joint placement for DFW's temperature swings and clay soil movement. Stamped, brushed, and exposed aggregate finish options with penetrating sealer protection for decorative surfaces.

Retaining Walls With Engineered Drainage

Concrete block, natural stone, and timber retaining walls built with gravel backfill and a perforated drain pipe behind every course so hydrostatic pressure doesn't accumulate and push the wall forward. Walls over four feet in exposed height are permitted and engineered as required by Irving's building code.

Outdoor Kitchen and Fire Pit Concrete Foundations

Concrete slab and paver foundations for outdoor kitchens, fire pits, and fireplace bases designed for the point loads created by heavy outdoor appliances and the thermal stress of open-flame heat sources adjacent to the concrete surface.

French Drain, Channel Drain, and Grade Correction

Drainage solutions selected based on a full property grade assessment that identifies where water comes from and where it needs to go. French drains, channel drains, area drains, and grade re-routing are all options depending on the source and volume of the drainage problem.

Steel Edging and Landscape Border Installation

Landscape borders in steel, aluminum, concrete, and stone installed to define planting beds, separate turf from hardscape, and hold their position through Irving's seasonal soil movement without lifting, shifting, or collapsing under mowing equipment.

Paver Patios That Stay Level Through Irving's Annual Soil Movement

Paver patios are the most flexible hardscaping surface in an Irving backyard because individual pavers can be lifted, base material added or removed, and the paver reset when soil movement creates an uneven section — without replacing the entire surface. That repairability advantage over concrete is real, but only when the paver installation started with a base system designed for the soil movement it will face. A paver base that doesn't extend below the active clay zone will move with the soil and produce the same uneven surface a concrete slab develops, just without the cracks. We design and install paver patios with the excavation depth, base material specification, compaction verification, and edge restraint system required for Irving's specific clay soil conditions. Pattern selection, paver color, and joint material are finalized before any material is ordered so the finished patio reflects the design you approved rather than what was available on installation day.

Concrete Driveways and Patios That Crack Where We Planned, Not Where You'll See

Concrete is the most cost-effective hardscaping surface per square foot in Irving and the most durable under heavy use when it's designed and poured correctly. The correctly is doing real work: mix design, reinforcement schedule, forming, and control joint placement all determine whether the slab performs as intended or develops uncontrolled cracks in locations the homeowner will see and find frustrating every time they look at the surface. Saw-cut control joints placed at the correct spacing and pattern guide thermal expansion cracks to the joint locations rather than across the visible slab surface. Rebar reinforcement ties slab panels together across the joints so the pavement holds its alignment even as the joints do their intended job of accommodating movement. Stamped and decorative finish options are sealed with a penetrating sealer that protects color and texture through DFW's freeze-thaw and UV exposure cycles.

Retaining Walls That Hold Grade Through Every Rain Season

A retaining wall in an Irving yard solves a grade problem and creates usable flat area that wouldn't otherwise exist, but only when it's built with the correct structural design for the height and soil conditions, and the drainage system to prevent hydrostatic pressure from becoming the load the wall was never designed for. We build concrete blocks, natural stone, and treated timber retaining walls based on the height of the grade change, the type of soil being retained, and the surcharge load from any structures, driveways, or slopes above the retaining level. Walls that exceed four feet of exposed height in Irving generally require a building permit and in some cases structural engineering documentation.

Drainage Corrections That Address Water at Its Source, Not Its Symptoms

Standing water in an Irving backyard is a foundation risk, a mosquito habitat, and a sign that the grade or drainage infrastructure isn't routing water where it needs to go. We assess the full property drainage pattern before specifying any solution — shooting grades across the yard, mapping where water enters the property, and identifying every location where it pools, moves toward the foundation, or creates erosion channels through planting areas. The drainage solution we specify is based on that assessment, not on what the most common solution happens to be for a generic yard. French drains, channel drains, area drains, and grade re-routing are all tools we use for Irving drainage corrections depending on the source, volume, and discharge requirements of the specific property. We present the recommended solution with an explanation of why it addresses the actual problem and what each component of the design does, so you understand what's being installed and how it will perform through the first full year of North Texas weather cycles.
